A filling replaces part of a tooth that has been lost because of decay or accidental damage.
Unlike silver (amalgam) fillings white fillings can be bonded to teeth which reduces the possibility of further decay. Because of continuous development they are now considered strong enough to be used routinely for the restoration of back teeth.
What will my dentist do?
- normally apply surface anaesthetic cream to numb the gum and then a local anaesthetic to numb the tooth
- whenever possible rubber dam is applied
- entirely remove the old filling
- remove any decay
- treat the prepared surfaces to receive the bonding and filling material
- wash and dry the tooth
- put the filling material into the tooth and shape it
- set the filling by pointing a bright light at it inside your mouth
- trim and polish the filling.
